Ekaterinburg is the fourth largest Russian city, the administrative center of Sverdlovsk Oblast and the main industrial and cultural center of the Ural Federal District. Ekaterinburg is situated in the middle of the Eurasian continent, on the border of Europe and Asia. It was founded in 1723 by the order of Peter the Great as the metallurgical factory and by the 20th century it had become one of Russia's largest and most important financial, industrial and cultural centers.
